Cons:
Clean, safe, basic. There are more expensive options in town if you are looking for quality. I expected much worse based on some of these reviews and was pleased to find a clean, functioning room where I spent a safe and relaxing night. The staff seemed decent also. I frequently stay at the cheapest place in town, and I started reading reviews after staying in some truly horrible rooms, but this place was totally acceptable for a lowest priced option. I would stay there again.
Really dirty. My sheets had some very large blood stains in them and the room was in disrepair. No air conditioning either. Nothing was in good shape
Definitely not worth $110 per night. Next time we will be staying elsewhere.
Pros:
Old but clean place to stay at a small price than the bigger lodging. Also includes all the amenities of the Aspen lodge. Might miss store conditioning on warmer days. Easy walking distance to everything in town.
Both rooms our group had were in need of serious renovations and repairs. The windows really didn't want to open. TV's didn't really work. The beds were terrible and in need of replacement. The screen doors were duct taped together. Issues with the showers. In general it seemed like the place is falling apart.
The staff was incredibly nice and the donuts they had in the morning were excellent
The Spruceglen Inn is in rough shape. The room was clean and that's about it.
Spent the night there before going into the Boundary Waters. A friend booked their room and ours together. We figured it the place would be decent considering the $110 per night with the dog fee and the Grand Marais Hotel Company seems to take care of their properties.
Don't stay here unless you have to
This motel needs a lot of help. The room left a lot to be desired, I suppose it was nice being able to park 3 feet from the door. The reason I gave 2 stars (rather than 1) was the helpfulness of staff next door at the co-owned Aspen Lodge, the pool/hot tub available at the Aspen Lodge, and the complimentary breakfast...at the Aspen Lodge.
